Brolga Breeding Habitat: A Guide to Managing Wetlands on Your Farm

Wetlands are hotspots for wildlife.

They can support a wonderfully diverse concentration of native birds, mammals, reptiles, frogs, fish, invertebrates and plants.

Many species are dependent on these habitats for at least part of their life cycle, and ultimately for their survival.

The much-loved Brolga is one of them. They are often seen feeding out in paddocks or crop stubble but for breeding they rely on shallow wetland areas vegetated with low cover like Eleocharis Spike-rushes and Canegrass. These are usually ephemeral wetlands, which are short-lived wetlands that have a distinct wetting-drying cycle.

This guide can help landholders manage their wetlands for Brolgas.
